Electrical Regulations Guide For Your Home & Property

Canberra electrical regulations

As a homeowner & property owner, it’s important to have a good understanding of the Canberra electrical regulations that apply to your property. Not only this will ensure your safety, but it will also help you avoid penalties that could arise from any electricity-related issues on your property.

Canberra Electrical Regulations

Electrical work should only be carried out by electricians

All electrical work done in Canberra must be completed by a licenced electrician. This includes both new installations and repairs or modifications to existing installations. Always remember that any DIT electrical work is strictly prohibited and illegal. This could also result in hefty penalties if found during an inspection.

Electrical work safety certificates are required

Every electrical installation and modification must be certified by a licenced electrician through a Certificate of Compliance. This certificate is written proof that the work meets safety standards and has been completed by a qualified electrician. The certificates must be kept on file and made available for inspection if requested by an authorised party, such as building inspector or insurance company.

Smoke alarms are mandatory

In Canberra, all residential & commercial properties must have smoke alarms installed in accordance with Australian standards. This includes having at least one working smoke alarm on each level of the property. It’s also recommended that these smoke alarms be interconnected. This is important so that if one alarm goes off, all alarms in the property will sound.

Safety switches are required for certain circuits

Also known as Residual Current Devices (RCDs), safety switches protect against electric shock. These are required for all power outlets and lighting circuits in new & renovated homes, especially power outlets that could be used to supply electrical equipment outside or near water sources such as outdoor areas, bathrooms, and kitchens.

Regular safety inspections are required

While not mandatory, it’s a good idea to have your property’s electrical system inspected regularly by a licenced electrician. This can help identify potential safety hazards and ensure that your installation remains compliant with Australian standards.

By following these guidelines, you can help ensure that your property’s electrical system is safe, up-to-date, and compliant with Australian standards. If you have any questions or concerns about electrical regulations in Canberra, be sure to consult with a licenced electrician or visit your state or territory government website.
